Since winning Urban Music Awards Best Newcomer in 2014, Stephanie McCourt has been traveling around the UK with Punch Records’ Soul Acoustic tour, taking her sophisticated soul sound to new audiences. With heavy influences from the “golden era of soul”, Stephanie looked to artists like Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles as her musical inspirations, which clearly comes across in her music as well as her distinctive 1950’s style.

As Ms McCourt truly embodies the True Skool brand with her old soul and fresh take on music, it’s only right to shine a light on her with an IITS 6. Find out which famous songwriter she’s working with, what she’d ask Elvis Presley and why the man behind the iPhone is one of her inspirations.

What current projects are you working on?

My EP ‘Stripped Back’ was released in August and is available to buy from Itunes. At the moment we have started work on the new ep. I have been collaborating with EFX who produced my last ep ‘Stripped Back’. I have also been collaborating with an amazing songwriter called Niara Scarlett. She has written both Number 1s for Girls Aloud (Sound of the underground)  and Sugababes (Hole in the head) as well as other successful records. I’m really excited about getting back in the studio and creating some magical tracks for 2015 can’t wait to get this music out of me!

If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be and what would say to them?

It would probably be Elvis Presley, I’d say do you fancy doing a duet of ‘In the Ghetto’ with me it would make my life!

What other profession, other than your own, would you like to try out?

Both my parents are in construction, having hung around building sites a great deal of my life I have always been excited by the development process and over the years this has had a massive influence on me, therefore property development is something I will definitely be trying out at some point, though at the moment my full focus is on being a success in the music industry.

What makes your music unique from others?

I have a heavy influence of old Soul / R’n’b music, I grow up listening to the likes of Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Etta James, Ray Charles and Janis Joplin to name a few ,this musical era has definitely had an impact on my writing and singing! So I would say that what makes my music unique is the nod I give to old soul, whilst adding a modern twist.

Sum up your life in a movie/song?

Christina Aguilera – Fighter! I would have to say this song sums up everything that I am! At some point in our lives we all get let down by somebody that you think has your back time and time again, working in the music industry this happens a lot you have to learn to grow thick skin and get back up again and again! Which can be very emotionally challenging at times, so yes I would like to think of myself as a fighter.

Do you have a famous affirmation that inspires you or if not one of your own?

Yes Steve Jobs did an inspirational speech at Stanford University it was seriously one of the most moving speeches I had ever listened to, it really connected well with me particularly the two below statements.

‘You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.’

‘Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.’
