REVIEW: DOC BROWN & GUESTS TAKE TO THE STAGE FOR BMT LAUNCH | JAN 2018

Still buzzing from the vibe of BMT, my first show in almost a year. The hope was to shed new light on the amazing everyday stories of black men in the UK. National Storytelling Week served as the perfect platform. All performers delved into our ‘His Story’ audio archive weeks before to unearth some powerful real life stories for inspiration. Each one of them took the time to listen intently and craft the pieces they went on to share the BMT stage.

Justin Marosa delivered a tender and melancholic monologue exploring a boys journey into adulthood, set against a backdrop of unrealised dreams and neighbourhood gentrification. Chris Preddie’s passionate prose painted vivid portraits of a homeless man’s plight and a hustler’s unbridled ambition – both pieces crackled with intensity and conviction. Actor, rapper and comedian Doc Brown rounded the night off with the moving biographical tale of Spider J, one of the UK music scene’s genuinely unsung heroes. It was a performance that touched everyone in the sold out venue, none more so than Spider J himself, who was seated in the front row. I invited him on stage to meet Doc and share the moment. A photo op for all involved brought the night to a fitting close.

As master of ceremonies, I took turns throughout to set the scene, introducing each act and interviewing them briefly on stage. Beyond my usual duties I had an opportunity to try something different and indulge my comedic side; I’d like to think my version of the news BMT style would have made Trevor McDonald proud. It was truly a special evening fully of poignant moments, hard laughs and wonderful connection. I’m certain this won’t be the last.
(Oh, and if you were wondering… our BMT experience started and finished on time. Just! 😏)
